HireWow vs Fountain

An AI interviewer, not just an ATS with AI bolted on

Fountain is a workflow product — an applicant tracking system designed for high-volume hourly hiring, with AI features layered on. HireWow is built around the AI interview itself: the actual conversation that decides whether a candidate is worth a manager's time. Different product, different problem.

The honest quick take

Both products solve real hiring problems. Here's when each one is the better choice.

Pick Fountain when

You need a true ATS for hourly hiring — application forms, drag-and-drop candidate pipelines, multi-stage workflows, document collection, I-9 prep, integrations across the talent stack — and the AI features inside the ATS are a nice-to-have on top of that core workflow.

Pick HireWow when

Your actual hiring bottleneck is conducting first-round interviews — phone screens are eating manager time and slowing decisions — and you want the interview itself replaced by a real AI conversation that produces transcripts and scored evaluations. You either don't need an ATS or already have one.

Where Fountain shines

We're not pretending Fountain is bad software. They have real strengths — here's where they earn their reputation.

  • Best-in-class hourly ATS workflow. Multi-stage pipelines, document collection, automated SMS nudges, manager assignment — all the workflow plumbing that hourly hiring at scale actually needs.
  • Mature integrations across job boards, background check vendors, payroll systems, and HRIS — the kind of vendor ecosystem that takes years to build.
  • Strong product for gig economy and on-demand hiring (DoorDash, Instacart-adjacent operators) — built around that flow from day one.
  • I-9 collection, onboarding doc workflows, and compliance tooling integrated directly into the candidate flow — meaningful for franchise and high-turnover environments.
  • Established multi-location and franchise customer base — they understand the operator complexity at scale.

How HireWow is different

What we built that Fountain didn't — and why it matters for high-volume hiring.

We're solving the interview, not the ATS

Fountain replaces (or augments) your ATS. HireWow replaces (or augments) the live interview itself. If your bottleneck is workflow — applications routing to the wrong location, candidates falling through stage transitions, doc collection — Fountain is closer to your problem. If your bottleneck is the actual screening conversation, that's us.

A real conversation, not a chat form

Fountain has added AI features over the past couple of years, but the core flow is a candidate filling out structured stages — including chat-based screening. HireWow runs an actual back-and-forth voice or video conversation, captures it as a transcript, and scores it. Different category of output: chat answers vs. an interview recording.

Plug into your existing stack, don't replace it

If you already have an ATS you like — or you're on Fountain itself — HireWow can sit alongside as the interview layer. Route candidates from your ATS into HireWow for the screening conversation, get the transcript and score back, and continue your existing pipeline. We don't ask you to rip out workflow to get AI interviews.

Pricing scales with output, not seats

Fountain is per-location or per-volume tiers — you pay regardless of whether candidates are flowing through. HireWow charges per completed interview, so a slow month costs less and a peak month scales naturally. For seasonal operators (summer, holidays, peak hiring waves), this lines up with how revenue actually works.

Switching from Fountain: FAQ

Are you saying we shouldn't use Fountain?

Not at all — they solve a different problem. If your hiring bottleneck is workflow (multi-location pipelines, application routing, doc collection, onboarding paperwork), Fountain is genuinely good at that. We're for the interview itself. Plenty of customers run Fountain as the ATS and HireWow as the interview layer. The question is which problem is actually slowing you down.

Doesn't Fountain have AI screening already?

They've added AI features — automated screening questions, candidate Q&A chatbots, some ranking — over the past couple of years. The core flow is still ATS-driven: candidate moves through stages, AI sprinkled in. HireWow is built the other way around: the AI interview is the product, and the workflow is lightweight around it. If you want AI to actually conduct the interview (voice, follow-ups, transcript), that's our angle.

Can HireWow replace Fountain entirely?

Probably not for an operator who's deep on Fountain's workflow features. We don't do I-9 collection, document workflows, or onboarding paperwork. If you'd be ripping Fountain out and trying to do everything in HireWow, that's not our use case. But if you'd be moving the interview step out of Fountain (or layering us on top), that's exactly what we're built for.

We're a small operator — is HireWow overkill?

Probably not. A 5-location restaurant group running ~100 hires a year would pay HireWow about $1,500 a year ($99/mo Pro + ~$400/yr in interviews). Fountain doesn't typically sell at that price point. If you're running fewer than ~20 hires a month, the free tier (3 interviews/month) is genuinely useful for evaluating us with real candidates.

How do the candidate experiences compare?

Fountain's flow looks like a structured application — the candidate works through stages, sometimes interacting with a chatbot, often filling forms. HireWow's flow has the candidate answer one short application, then click a link to take a real conversational AI interview. Different feel: form vs interview. For roles where the candidate's communication style matters (anything customer-facing, hospitality, retail, healthcare support), the conversation format reveals more.

Can we run a parallel test?

Yes — and a lot of customers do this when they're moving from Fountain or considering layering us on top. Define one role, route some applicant traffic through HireWow's interview, keep the rest on your existing screening flow, and compare outcomes after 30 days: completion rate, manager time saved, day-1 retention of the hires that came through each path. Real data, not vendor claims.
