HireWow vs HireVue

A two-way AI conversation, not a recorded monologue

HireVue invented the async video interview — candidates record themselves answering pre-set prompts on a webcam. HireWow runs a real back-and-forth conversation: the AI listens, asks follow-ups, and adapts. Here's when each one is the better fit.

The honest quick take

Both products solve real hiring problems. Here's when each one is the better choice.

Pick HireVue when

You're a Fortune 500 with a large TA team that already runs structured behavioral interviews, you want every candidate to record the same prompts on video for human reviewer panels, and you have the time to build a competency-based assessment library inside the HireVue platform.

Pick HireWow when

You hire hourly or volume roles, you want a real conversational interview rather than a recorded answer-the-prompt session, you want results faster than waiting for a recruiter to review videos, and your candidate pool would balk at being asked to record themselves on camera answering pre-set questions.

Where HireVue shines

We're not pretending HireVue is bad software. They have real strengths — here's where they earn their reputation.

  • Decades of investment in industrial-organizational psychology and validated assessment science. If your TA org is built around competency models and behavioral interviewing, HireVue's frameworks are mature.
  • Established Fortune 500 customer base — Hilton, Unilever, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and many more run HireVue at scale. The brand carries weight in procurement.
  • Deep ATS integrations and enterprise security/compliance certifications (SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR/CCPA tooling) that large companies require.
  • Coding assessments and structured technical evaluations for engineering hiring — a use case HireWow doesn't address.
  • Mature recruiter dashboards designed for large TA teams reviewing thousands of candidate videos in parallel.

How HireWow is different

What we built that HireVue didn't — and why it matters for high-volume hiring.

Conversation, not monologue

Recorded video interviews put the candidate alone with a webcam answering a prompt. There's no follow-up, no clarification, no adaptive depth. HireWow is a real conversation — the AI hears what the candidate said, asks the next question that actually fits, and keeps going. Real interviews work that way; recorded prompts don't.

Better candidate experience for hourly populations

Hourly candidates frequently don't have a quiet, well-lit place to record themselves on camera — and many simply won't. Phone calls and conversational interfaces clear the bar; on-camera recording often doesn't. Operators tell us HireVue completion rates trend low for the populations we serve; HireWow stays high because the format meets candidates where they are.

No multi-month implementation

HireVue's value lives in custom assessment libraries, behavioral interview frameworks, and competency calibration — all of which take months to build with a HireVue implementation team. HireWow has structured-interview principles baked in by default and lets you customize rubrics in minutes. You're live the same day you sign up.

Priced for actual SMB economics

HireVue is an enterprise product with enterprise pricing. We're built for the operator running 50–500 hires a year — the franchisee, the regional chain, the staffing agency, the multi-location healthcare group. Per-completed-interview pricing means you only pay for output, never for shelfware while waiting on integration.

Switching from HireVue: FAQ

Why would conversational AI work better than recorded video?

Real interviews adapt. When a candidate gives a vague answer, a good interviewer asks a follow-up; when they mention something interesting, a good interviewer probes. Recorded prompts can't do either — the candidate gets one shot per question, in front of a camera, with no real-time feedback. HireWow's AI listens to what the candidate actually said and asks the right next question, which gets you signal that asynchronous video can't.

Doesn't HireVue have AI scoring built in?

Yes — HireVue layered AI on top of recorded video over the past several years (and faced public scrutiny over the facial-analysis components, which they've largely walked back). But the underlying interview is still asynchronous: candidate records, AI scores. HireWow's AI is doing the interview itself — choosing the questions, adapting to answers — not just scoring a recording after the fact. Different category.

What happens if candidates don't have a webcam?

On HireVue, that's a problem — most flows expect on-camera. On HireWow, it's not — candidates can take the interview entirely by phone if they prefer. For hourly hiring populations, this matters: phone-first dramatically increases completion rates over webcam-first.

How do the costs actually compare for a mid-market customer?

HireVue is annual contract pricing, sales-led, and typically lands between $50k and $500k+ per year depending on volume, integrations, and the assessment library scope. HireWow Pro is $99/month plus $4 per completed interview; Business is $399/month plus $3 per interview. A 200-location regional operator running ~1,500 hires a year would land in the $5–10k range with us; the same operator wouldn't typically be in HireVue's customer base.

Can HireWow do the technical interviews HireVue does?

We don't currently focus on coding assessments or specialized technical evaluations — that's a real HireVue strength we don't replicate. Our sweet spot is hourly, frontline, and operations roles where structured behavioral interviewing is what actually predicts success. If you're hiring software engineers, HireVue (or a coding-specific tool) is closer to your problem.

How quickly can we move our hiring flow over?

If you're moving the screening step (not your entire ATS or assessment ecosystem), HireWow can run in parallel within an hour. Define one role, route a portion of candidate traffic through HireWow, compare outcomes against your existing HireVue process. We don't ask for commitment until the data is in.
